What do I need to know about overtures?

OV-08 Draft – God alone is the “author and giver” of life

This is a repeat of the Mississippi overture from 2006. This overture:

Affirms that God alone is the “author and giver” of life,

States that the church opposes abortion,

Calls the church to share the burden of individuals confronted with unwanted pregnancies, and

Extends the love of Christ to those who have suffered the practice of abortion.

OV-08 Draft - Life begins at fertilization

Affirms life begins at fertilization.

Calls for clarification in policies on problem pregnancies and abortion.

OV-08 Draft – Calls the church to accept, respect and love those diagnosed with disabilities before birth

Calls the PC(USA) to accept, respect, love, and minister to those diagnosed with disabilities before birth

Issues various specific calls to the church to implement this acceptance, respect, and love.

OV-08 Draft – Would discontinue all coverage of abortion by the Board Of Pensions Medical Benefits Plan

Directs the Board of Pensions to cease coverage of abortion

And devise an optional abortion coverage provision for those churches who want it

OV-08 Draft – Would require the Board of Pensions to provide an annual “Relief of Conscience Plan Report”

Directs the Board of Pensions to provide an annual Relief of Conscience Plan Report

And to confirm with churches their participation in the plan annually

OV-08 Draft – Affirms Health Care Professionals Right of Conscience

Affirms health care professionals in their God given vocation according to their faith and conscience as informed by the Word of God in Scripture.

Includes both positive actions and refusal to participate in actions medical professionals understand would result in harm.

OV-08 Draft – Affirms parental involvement in health care decisions and encourages communication with parents

Affirms the need for parents to be involved in health care decisions of dependent children

Encourages physicians and other health care providers to communicate with parents of these patients

Directs the GAC & all PC(USA) entities to be consistent with this affirmation in materials in print and on website.

OV-08 Draft - Equitable funding & advocacy of both pro-life and pro-choice views or none at all

Admonishes the entities of the PC(USA) to fairly represent the 1992 abortion policy in its materials, advocacy and funding, funding and advocating both the pro-life and pro-choice views or none at all.
