Made in God's Image: Part Three Print E-mail

Eddel in uteroWhat does Scripture teach regarding the nature of human life and the unborn? What are the implications of this teaching for the taking of innocent life? Third of six articles on Scriptural themes that indicate why we are pro-life.

C. God forbids us to kill innocent life

Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17; Amos 1:13; Leviticus 18:21

"Thus says the LORD: For three transgressions of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they have ripped open pregnant women in Gilead, that they might enlarge their border." —Amos 1:13

There is a moment in the story of the Lord of the Rings when, upon discovering that the wretched and wicked creature Gollum is following their trail, Frodo wishes that his uncle Bilbo had killed Gollum when he had the opportunity to do so, many years before. Gandalf chastises Frodo asking, "Can you give life? Do not be so quick to take it away." Only God should decide death and life. Part of the terribleness of abortion is not only that it is the killing of a life, but that in choosing abortion we put ourselves before God: deciding who will live and who will die. We take a role that is reserved for Him.

Rates of miscarriage increase after abortion

Studies involving miscarriage (spontaneous abortion prior to 20 weeks gestation) show mixed results, but a recent large study from China in women who had not yet given birth showed at least a 55% increase in first trimester miscarriage after first trimester induced abortion. Studies show a larger risk after multiple abortions. The rate of premature birth, especially of very early premature birth, is increased after induced abortion. Studies have shown an increased risk averaging 36% with one induced abortion rising to 93% with multiple induced abortions.

Baby in utero at approximately 7 weeksWhat does Scripture teach regarding the nature of human life and the unborn? This is the second of six Scriptural themes that indicate why we are pro-life.

B. The meaning and purpose God has for each human person begins before birth

Genesis 4:1; I Samuel 1:20; Matthew 1:20 - 21; Job 31:15; Psalm 139:13 - 16; Jeremiah 1:5

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. --Psa. 139:16

I suspect that one key reason why support for abortion rights has been losing ground in recent years is because of changing technology. On one hand, our hospitals are able to support infants prematurely as early as twenty-four weeks of gestational development and, on the other hand, sonogram ultrasound technology provides very clear photographic evidence that the developing baby is undeniably human. We can see with our own eyes that the baby in the womb is a baby.

Talking about Abortion Print E-mail
Written by Marie Bowen

conversationRecently I was asked how I answer those who oppose the pro-life position. Whenever we address those with whom we disagree, it is of first importance to be mindful that he/she too is created by God in His image and someone for whom Christ died. Let that change your heart, your tone, and your demeanor. There is more at stake than "winning" an argument. Stick to the facts and leave the rest to God.

Health Risks of Abortion, Part 2 of 3 Print E-mail

Martha LeathermanThe issue of the effect of abortion on women's psychiatric health has become a political football. Both pro-abortion and pro-life advocates have found research data to support their respective positions.

For those of us who believe that God is the Author of life, the ultimate, rather than the political answer to this question is very important for three reasons. First, women considering abortion need to be able to have accurate warnings of risks to their psychological well-being. Second, in ministering to post-abortive women we need to know the degree to which the abortion might increase their risk of depression, anxiety, or even suicide. Third, we need to be able to honestly educate the vast majority of people who are not actively involved in either pro-abortion or pro-life work about the true impact of abortion on women.
