Religious Coalition advises women to find "Your Own Truth" PDF Print E-mail

The Presbyterian Church (USA) belongs to an organization called the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) (formerly the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights (RCAR)). RCRC receives several thousand dollars a year in grants from our denomination offices. A recent brochure distributed by the organization is called "Abortion: Finding Your Own Truth." The opening paragraph says,

"People use many different names for their spirituality. One name is God. Others are Greater Truth, Higher Power, Voice Within, Inner Light, Loving Spirit, Holy Spirit, and Infinite Wisdom. In these exercises, we often refer to spirituality simply as Truth, or the voice of Truth."

The brochure suggests several "exercises" for finding truth in making decision about abortion. In the first, the woman is advised to find a quiet place where she can be alone, get comfortable, close her eyes and breathe deeply to relax her body completely.

"Now place both hands over your heart and imagine or remember a time when you were feeling full of love, relaxed, and happy. Notice how your body responds. Where in your body do you experience sensations of warmth, relaxation, softening, and expansiveness? This is where your Truth resides. Listen to this place as you seek to discover what is right for you."

Presbyterians might legitimately question the stewardship of supporting not only encouragement of decisions for abortion, but also a spirituality quite foreign to reformed faith.
