Princeton Students Against Infanticide (PSAI) Rally
Approximately a year ago, a seminarian at Princeton Theological Seminary named Christopher Benek learned that Peter Singer was scheduled to be appointed professor of Human Values at Princeton University. Chris met with students on both campuses and organized a group called Princeton Students Against Infanticide (PSAI). The group began actively to oppose Singer's appointment to Princeton's faculty.
I don't know if you are familiar with Peter Singer. He is an animal rights activist whose perspective comes from a belief that there is no significant distinction between animals and humans. In his opinion, the Judeo-Christian tradition is a major problem in making sound decisions about who lives and who dies. In a 1998 edition of his book Practical Ethics, he writes (page 190):
...At present parents can choose to keep or destroy their disabled offspring only if the disability happens to be detected during pregnancy. There is no logical basis for restricting parents' choice to these particular disabilities. If disabled newborn infants were not regarded as having a right to life until, say, a week or a month after birth it would allow parents, in consultation with their doctors, to choose on the basis of far greater knowledge of the infant's condition than is possible before birth.
The PSAI group is aware that such views about the value of human life move from the fringe of society's thinking into the mainstream when someone like Singer holds a teaching position at a major U.S. University. They have made certain that this appointment will not happen without the public opposition of faithful Christians and others for whom the Christian defense of human life, reflected in our laws and values, has been critical to the protection of their own lives. The students have held rallies which have been attended by many people in wheelchairs, carrying placards that say, "My life IS worth living!"
PSAI is holding another rally in September. I hope you will consider joining them. They will welcome people of all ages. Apparently the television show 60 Minutes is planning a feature on Singer and is expected to be at this rally.
