Sanctity of Human Life Sunday - Ideas for Churches 2008

Prior to SOHL Sunday

Baby Shower for Local Pregnancy Center – Set up a crib in your lobby and collect baby clothing, diapers, and other items. Collect donations and give the crib to an expectant mother in need or your local pregnancy care center.

Baby Bottle Campaign – Contact your local Pregnancy Care Center to participate in a baby bottle campaign to help raise funds for their facility. Distribute the bottles 3-4 weeks prior and collect them on SOHL Sunday.

Local Ministries – Invite Local Adoption Agencies and Pregnancy Care Centers to set up displays in your church. Invite one of these organizations to do a minute for mission during the church service.

Photo Display – Prior to SOHL, display photos of fetal pictures, infants, children, teens, adults, and the aged in chronological order with a banner that says “Celebrate Life”; “Life is precious”; “Jesus Loves the Little Children”; or “All Made in God’s Image”. Use photos from your own church family so everyone knows their lives are cherished.

Fetal Models – Display a set of fetal models showing the development of the unborn. Your local pregnancy center may have these to display for you or can purchase your own online at Heritage House (www.hh76.com) or Focus on the Family (www.resources.family.org )

In Sunday School

Show the movie, “Horton Hears a Who” during Sunday School and talk about the value of each person no matter how different, how weak, or how smart.

Use PPL’s Youth Brochure on Abortion to launch a topical discussion in your teen class. Order online at www.ppl.org or call 412-487-1990.

Launch a six-week adult study on life issues using PPL’s DVD curriculum, “Created, Loved, and Called.” Order online at www.ppl.org or call 412-487-1990.

In Worship Service

Preach a pro-life sermon from PPL’s website http://ppl.org/srmindex.html (sample attached) or write your own. Boldly proclaim the good news that God knows us, has plans for us, and calls us while we are still in the womb.

Children’s Sermon – Use the children’s sermon we have enclosed, written by PPL Board member Di Lupton or develop your own object lesson showing the value of life. Access Di’s sermon at http://ppl.org/srm1.html .

Scriptures that proclaim God’s love for the unborn include: Psalm 139, Isaiah 44, Psalm 22, Jeremiah 1, Luke 1, and Galatians 1. Scriptures that prohibit the shedding of blood: Genesis 9:6, Exodus 23:7, and Matthew 18:14.

Music – Choose life affirming music (Borning Cry, Wings of the Dawn, Jesus Loves the Little Children) and/or music about God’s grace and mercy (Amazing Grace).
