Youth sexuality curriculum continues to oppose constitutional standards:
churches need to appeal to G.A. again!

The 2002 General Assembly voted to allow the Congregational Ministries Division (CMD) to do what they please with a youth sexuality curriculum that seeks to normalize homosexual behavior and approve teenagers’ decisions to be sexuality active and protect themselves with the "choice" of abortion.

Roughly one-third of the commissioners to the 2002 General Assembly understood the significance of the issues before the Assembly and the concerns of Presbyterians in our pews. One third voted against late term abortion, for compliance with the church constitution, against further depleting our missionary corps, and against allowing CMD to ignore the explicit direction of prior General Assemblies.

Fully ten years after the publication of the first section of the PC(USA)’s youth sexuality curriculum, God’s Gift of Sexuality, the G.A. in 1998 expressed its will that our youth be led toward decisions of sexual purity. The Youth Advisory Delegates to that Assembly led the body with their call to the Church for leadership in setting expectations for youth.

Two subsequent G.A.’s directed the CMD to bring the curriculum into compliance with the constitutional standards of the denomination. CMD dragged their heels. From 1998 to 2002, they failed to take a single step toward revision or rewrite of the curriculum as directed by the G.A. Each year they begged the G.A. for more time. They begged to be allowed to distribute the curriculum whose teaching opposes the constitution and they were granted permission to do that.

Last year CMD protested that discontinuing the sexuality curriculum would be too expensive. Two-thirds of the commissioners let them get away with continuing to distribute the unrevised curriculum as long as they choose.

Time is up. CMD has completely lost credibility. They will not change the sexuality curriculum or stop distributing the curriculum that opposes church standards unless they are ordered to stop by the General Assembly. It is time for the G.A. to clearly issue that order.

In answer to the question, "Is there disagreement with [the constitutional] understanding of homosexuality within our church?" the curriculum says, "The stand of our church is to en-courage all church members to continue dialogue within the church. We believe there is al-ways the possibility for more light to break forth from God’s Spirit to aid our understanding."

This teaching appears in every level of the curriculum from preschool through high school.
