Book Notice: by Thomas C. Oden (HarperSanFrancisco, 2003) Oden is a man who might be called a recovered liberal. He is one of the modern theologians—Richard Neuhaus is another similar figure of note—who found their way to orthodoxy, by their own testimony, largely through the issue of abortion. In this most recent book of his, Oden notes a stark reversal in our time: as modern secular and political ideologies continue to wane, communities of traditional faith are flourishing now more than ever. In Christianity, this resurgence shows itself in widespread efforts to reclaim the classic spiritual practices: the close study of scripture, daily prayer, regular observance in a worshiping community, doctrinal integrity, and moral accountability. He dedicates this book to stalwarts in reform efforts across denominations, including the venerable John Leith. |
What’s fair about this? by Jim Berkley From the Presbyterians For Renewal 3/10 e-Newsletter. Our denomination has a rather odd policy about abortion that affirms pro-life and pro-choice stands as if they were morally equal and not contradictory. However, even the relatively evenhanded 1992 policy statement is not followed evenhandedly. If you seek information on "abortion" in the PCUSA web site’s index, you get PARO (Presbyterians Affirming Reproductive Options), a denominationally supported and housed organization that advocates exclusively for a pro-choice position. If you want anything about pro-life positions, you won’t find it in a denominational entity. Fair? Hardly. Presbyterians Pro-Life labors year in and year out to advocate for half of our official policy, and they do it on their own dime and with an extremely cold shoulder from Louisville. A recent PPL newsletter [ Winter, 2003] calmly maps out the denominational abortion playing field, which is anything but level. |
