Facts about Abortion
Currently, there are an estimated 1.4 million abortions in the U.S., and 50 million worldwide
52% of U.S. women having abortions are younger than 25. Teenagers have 20% of the abortions performed each year.
Nearly 50% of women having abortions each year have already had at least one abortion previously.
White women have 60% of all abortions, but the rate among white women is well below that of minority women. Black women are three times more likely to have an abortion and Hispanic women two times more likely.
Two-thirds of abortions are among never-married women.
The three most common reasons women give for having an abortion:
- 75% say that having a baby would interfere with work, school, or other responsibilities;
- 65% say they cannot afford a child;
- 50% say they do not want to be a single parent.
