New books of note

Preaching and Reading the Old Testament
, by Elizabeth Achtemeier.
This most recent fruit from the pen of one of the modern church's most prominent Bible scholars--and member of PPL's Board of Reference--provides expositions on all of the Old Testament texts contained in Cycle B of the Revised Common and Lutheran Lectionaries. It is a book for pastors, but not for pastors only. It provides plentiful and apt starting points for preparing sermons rooted in the Bible and, at the same time, connected to modern life. It also offers powerful commentary for study groups and personal devotional reading. Achtemeier's unrelenting focus on the promises of God appearing in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament, combined with her outstanding scholarship, make these essays a priceless resource. William Willimon, Dean of the Chapel at Duke University, comments: "We preachers have learned that there are few better interpreters of the Old Testament than Elizabeth Achtemeier....She really does enable us to preach texts from the Hebrew Bible in a new and delightful way." Published by CSS Publishing Co., Lima, OH 45802, (1-800-537-1030), 2002. $20.50
A Trial of Innocents
by Michael Andrew (reviewed by Rev. Ben Sheldon).
This is a fascinating story of two women, two babies and a plot that fully explores the whole pro-life vs. pro-abortion scenario of our present 21st century culture. It does so in a compelling and convincing manner. The author reveals a remarkably keen understanding of both medical and legal and judicial procedures, and he uses this knowledge to weave together a plot that leaves the reader guessing and wondering, whats next? from chapter to chapter. The author, himself a fairly new Christian, and a summa cum laude graduate of Ohio State, weaves in a strong evangelistic message, yet he does it in a graceful and acceptable way. I highly recommend the book for stimulating, provocative, and yet entertaining reading. Published by America House Book Publishers, Baltimore, MD, 2000.
