A Letter from Laureen

Dear Friends of PPL,

I hope all of you are well and being blessed in a special way by our Lord Jesus.  I am currently working on establishing a contact(s) within each of the 170+ presbyteries (this may take awhile) in order to find out which have assigned a task force to study abortion as requested at GA in 2006.  The committee recommendation on Item 10-03, Health Issues Committee was as follows:

The committee hereby recommends approval of the following alternate resolution:

To commend the Presbytery of Mississippi for its use of group discernment concerning abortion and recommend that all presbyteries create task forces to replicate their process of prayer and study, that hearts and minds may be open to God’s wisdom through scripture, other resources, and one another, and to direct the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly to communicate this action to the presbyteries.

The Assembly adopted the Committee’s recommendation to approve an alternate resolution by a vote of:  406 (affirmative); 71 (negative); 6 (abstaining). Because the vote was significantly in favor of the recommendation, we may need to remind the presbyteries (and maybe the Stated Clerk of the GA) that this action should be taken.

It is my understanding that the Boston and Donegal Presbyteries have initiated task forces (or are in the beginning stages) and that some others have elected not to participate in a study. Many have not yet considered this study effort recommended by the General Assembly. PPL encourages pro-life Presbyterians to participate on the task forces. Call me for resources and PPL materials to aid in your presbytery’s research.

If your presbytery has established a task force and you know who might be the chair or serving on it or know someone within the presbytery that I can call, please forward the name, which presbytery or church, and a phone number if possible. I’ve already finished cold calling the presbyteries in the Synods of the Trinity and the Living Waters. I’ll be using the PRN as a source too. Of course we’re hoping that establishing this contact list can help provide valuable information on actions being taken within each presbytery and inform us who friendly commissioners are for GA 2008.

Yours in Him,
