Breakfast with a kindergartner
Cullen was eating his typical breakfast before heading off to
kindergarten: a huge bowl of Cheerios covered with a thick layer of honey. It
would have been even thicker if we hadn’t monitored the number of many circles
he traced above this bowl with the inverted Honey Bear bottle. Like most
mornings I was there listening to the morning news program, reading the paper
and finishing off my cereal before heading to the office. The news broadcast
then turned to a short segment on a state legislative initiative to limit
abortions. Cullen heard the new word, “abortion.” So he rested his spoon in the
bowl and asked me what “abortion” means. I tried to be honest, without being
specific about methods. I didn’t get close to partial birth abortion. But even
my summary explanation was a shock to him. I watched his expression change from
puzzlement, to anger and, finally, to urgency. Without finishing his cereal he
ran to get his coat and grabbed his back pack. I asked him where he was going.
He said he had to get to school, early. He had to tell others about “this
thing, abortion.” “We have to stop this thing,” he said. I watched this little
guy run out the back door and across the yard. He had to do something to help
stop this horror, abortion.
